68-HOUR MEDICATION AIDE PROGRAM APPROVED BY THE VBON
To Become a Registered Medication Aide/ Med Tech
- To become a Registered Medication Aide (RMA) in Virginia, one must complete a 68-hour Medication Aide program approved by the Virginia State Board of Nursing (VBON), earn a Medication Aide/Medication Assistant school certificate of completion, and pass the Virginia Board of Nursing competency examination for Medication Aides.
- The Virginia Board of Nursing requires that a student have one of the following prerequisite options for the 68-hour Medication training.
- a 40-hour training in direct client care/ care worker from a training program approved by the Department of Social Services (DSS) or
- a certificate of completion from a Virginia Board of Nursing-approved Nurse Aide program or
- a current Virginia State Board of Nursing Nurse Aide Certificate (CNA) or
- a transcript from the Virginia Board of Nursing-approved Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse Program
Excel Health Institute uses a blended learning model that integrates 31 hours of online instruction, available anytime, anywhere, and 17 hours of in-person on-campus laboratory skills training, and 21.5 hours of clinical training at an Assisted Living facility. Students can complete the 68-hour Medication Aide program in 4 or 5 weeks and be fully prepared to take the Virginia Board of Nursing competency exam to become a Registered Medication Aide (RMA).
The Virginia State Board of Nursing has continuously approved the Excel Health Institute Medication Aide program since its inception in 2014. The Virginia State Board of Nursing Medication Aide exam pass rate for Excel Health Institute graduates has been consistently at least 10 percentage points above the Virginia State average, demonstrating our commitment to student success in preparing future Registered Medication Aides.
Medication Aide Program Description
The Medication Aide program prepares students to administer medications in Assisted Living Facilities. Skills students will acquire include proper procedures for preparing, administering, and maintaining medications, asepsis, basic pharmacology, assisting clients with self-administration of medication, and documentation.

- PROGRAM OUTCOME
Upon successful completion, students will be eligible to take the Virginia Board of Nursing Competency Examination to become a Registered Medication Aide (RMA).
Class Schedules
- Online instruction is available anytime, anywhere, offering maximum flexibility and convenience for both the regular 4-week program and the accelerated 3-week option.
- Laboratory skills training is in-person on campus, from 9.00 am to 6:00 pm, 2 days.
- Clinical training at the assisted living facility runs from 6:45 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., 2 days.
- Final Exam is in-person on campus, one day.
