140-HOUR NURSE AIDE PROGRAM APPROVED BY THE VBON
TO Become a Certified Nurse Aide!
- To become a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) in Virginia, one must complete the 140-hour Nurse Aide program approved by the Virginia State Board of Nursing, earn a Nurse Aide/ Nursing Assistant school certificate of completion, and pass the Virginia Board of Nursing Competency Examination for Nurse Aides.
- Excel Health Institute uses a blended learning model that integrates 57 hours of online instruction, available anytime, anywhere, 44 hours of on-campus laboratory skills training, and 43 hours of clinical training at a long-term care facility. Students can complete the Nurse Aide program in about 4, 6, or 8 weeks and be fully prepared to take the Virginia Board of Nursing (VBON) Competency exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in Virginia.
The Virginia State Board of Nursing has continuously approved the Excel Health Institute Nursing Aide Program since its inception in 2014. Our graduates consistently achieve Virginia State Board of Nursing competency exam average pass rates of above 90%, demonstrating our commitment to student success and excellence in preparing future Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs).
Nursing Aide Program Description
The Nurse Aide Program prepares students with the knowledge needed to work competently as Nurse Aides. The additional geriatrics knowledge students acquire in the program will entitle them to work in any facility that employs NAs (i.e., hospitals, nursing homes, private duty, and home healthcare). Nurse aides work under the supervision of a nurse. They can take vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature) and assist patients with basic nursing skills like bathing, toileting, dressing, grooming, eating, walking, turning bedridden patients, assisting wheelchair-bound patients, reporting changes to the nurse, safety awareness, and documentation.
Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a certificate of completion and be eligible to take the Certified Nurse Aide competency examination for the Virginia State Board of Nursing Certification.
Nurse Aide Core Curriculum
- Communication and interpersonal skills.
- Infection control.
- Safety and emergency procedures, including dealing with obstructed airways and fall prevention.
- Promoting client independence.
- Respecting clients' rights.
- Basic skills (examples: vital signs, taking care of the client’s environment etc.)
- Personal care skills (examples: bathing, toileting, feeding etc.)
- Individual clients' needs, including mental health and social service needs
- Care of the cognitively or sensory (visual and auditory) impaired client
- Skills for basic restorative services
- Legal and regulatory aspects of practice as a certified nurse aide
- Occupational health and safety measures.
- Appropriate management of conflict.
- Observational and reporting techniques
- Substance abuse and opioid misuse.

- Program Outcome
Upon successful completion, students will be eligible to take the Virginia Board of Nursing Examination to become a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA).
Class Schedules
- Online instruction is available anytime, anywhere, offering maximum flexibility and convenience for both the regular 4-week program and the accelerated 2-week option.
- Laboratory skills training is in-person on campus from 9.00 am to 6:00 pm. The applicant can choose one week (Monday - Friday) of weekday sessions or two weeks (Saturdays and Sundays) of weekend sessions.
- Clinical training at the long-term care facility runs from 6:45 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The selected clinical session must match the Laboratory skills training session.
- Final Exam is in-person on campus, one day.
